This wave can link and run for up to 2km. Your legs get exhausted from surfing it. It’s impossible to paddle back, so you can either get the boat service (30 soles) or take a jog back to the start (15-20 mins). The current is ridiculously strong, meaning that flat-out paddling is required to simply stay in position. Those that take the boat have fresh arms and can easily snake the wave. The water is pretty darn cold, wetsuit definitely required.

It wasn’t linking when I was there, as the swell was too small, but in some of the pics, you can see the outrageous potential. I surfed and got some decent rides, but I guess I’m just spoiled these days - fighting a current in freezing water for 2ft waves is only fun for so long.

The dust bowl town itself is very beautiful, with striking sand dunes and atmospheric decaying buildings. El Hombre hostal comes highly recommended, very friendly owners and it’s got the best view.
