Guinea pigs are a local delicacy, and are kept and handled like any other livestock. Locals haul around sacks of the most adorable little live guinea pigs, selling them at the market.
The dish is known as cuy, and I ordered one at a traditional restaurant. I didn’t expect to get the skull, remains of the ears and little twisted claw on my plate. It tasted ok, but there were about two mouthfuls of meat on the whole thing. The overall experience I found a little disturbing.
